About This Provider

Dr. Eric Schiffman, DDS, MS is one of the most credentialed orofacial pain specialists in the United States, with 42 years of clinical and research experience dedicated entirely to temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain. He earned his DDS from the University of Iowa in 1982 and went on to become the first resident to complete the University of Minnesota's 2-year TMD and Orofacial Pain Residency Program in 1985, followed by a Master of Science in Oral Biology in 1986. He holds a Diplomate certification from the American Board of Orofacial Pain, the specialty's highest credential. As Director of the Oral Health Clinical Research Center and former Director of the Division of TMD and Orofacial Pain at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Schiffman has secured more than $12 million in NIH and NIDCR research funding. His landmark randomized controlled trial with a five-year follow-up demonstrated that surgery is rarely necessary for even advanced TMJ disorders, research that continues to shape clinical guidelines nationwide. He practices at Minnesota Head and Neck Pain Clinic across four Twin Cities locations.
