Dr. Stephen Harkins is the founder of Harkins Pain and Sleep Management Group in Tucson, Arizona, where he has spent more than 40 years treating some of the most difficult pain and sleep conditions in dentistry and medicine. In 1981, he established one of the first private practice clinics in the world devoted exclusively to TMD, orofacial pain, headache, and sleep disorders. Over that career, he has treated more than 30,000 patients. Dr. Harkins holds a Diplomate certification from the American Board of Orofacial Pain (ABOP) and completed postgraduate training at the University of Minnesota, Harvard, UCLA, and the Mayo Clinic. He is certified in both clinical hypnosis and biofeedback therapy, expanding his treatment reach well beyond conventional dentistry. He developed and holds the patent for the Twilite Appliance®, a custom intraoral device for obstructive sleep apnea and snoring. Since 1984, he has served on the research faculty at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, and since 1986 he has consulted for the Veterans Administration Hospital in Tucson. His approach centers on minimally invasive, regenerative strategies that reduce pain and restore function with little to no reliance on prescription medication.
